These Celebrations and Their Unnecessary Epicness, 2015, HD video, colour, stereo, 5'51", 1 of 5 edition + 2 AP
This work was inspired by the cancellation of the annual fireworks celebration on National Day in Hong Kong in 2014. In response to the changing atmosphere between Hong Kong and China, the city had been in a hiatus state for as long as 4 months during the occupy movement. Rather than recording the familiar firework show, Leung has represented a domestic sparkling firework burning away slowly. The work appears as an invitation for the viewer to examine a firework scientifically - what it really looks like through the motion of burning, creating a mental space to reflect on how one might feel seeing such degree of sublime before their eyes, and what it might change with or without such event.
A Cone Zone, 2015, high grade resin, (270x270x650mm) variable dimensions, set of 3
Subsequently, the other accompanying work consists of three cones set on the gallery floor. They occupy the space, and the distance between them implies for another boundary set in the mind of the viewer, as a zone defined for something. Leung took interest in these crowd control objects for physical and mental management by the police. In some way, the cones themselves also occupy space within them.
